Older women can look Beautiful with LONG LOCKS!

Before the current century it was almost a certainty that all women regardless of age had long tresses. The older the woman, the longer her hair? exceptions to this were far and few in between.

However society changes with the times and it is now a general belief and in fact an expectation, that older women should have short hair. Society?s attitude dictating short hair on older women has been common knowledge for a long time.

In the 1920?s short hair became a fashion trend? even then the majority of women kept their hair long, but periodically wore it up in a variety of twists, braids and buns.

After World War II the hair care & beauty industry greeted the introduction of the shampoo and wet curler set for short hairstyles with gusto. One of the more prominent short styles was to become renowned as the ?PERM?.

Older woman began visiting their local hairdressers and emerged with short curls, and waves and older women with long hair became known as prime hair-makeover prospects by the beauty industry. It became very fashionable to get your hair done every single week, and as can be expected, this trend did not encourage long hair. Hairdressers welcomed the trend as it becomes a money-maker to trim and style the hair on a weekly or monthly basis.

1950?s & 60?s

Throughout the 1950?s, short hair was the preferred style for older women. Even when the 1960?s ushered in the ?hippy? era, bringing in longer hair for the younger women, the older ladies remained dedicated to their shampoo & set short styles. Short hair for the middle-aged and elderly was the norm and rarely were older women seen with hair past their shoulders.

There are still many people who believe older women should remain trapped in their short hair styles? but celebrities such as Cher, Demi Moore, Jane Seymour, and Madonna have spanned the gap proving that women over 40 can still look stunning with beautiful Long Locks.

Each woman should look and feel confident about their hair on an individual basis. If a woman looks fabulous, and her hair is in great condition and flattering to her face, she should wear her hair as long or short as she likes.  Melanie Griffith, Kim Basinger, and Sharon Stone all cut their hair as they got older, and Catherine Deneuve looks great with either long or shorter hair.

Jane Seymour (Dr Quinn ? Medicine Woman) is one of the most famous celebrity beauties that retains her gorgeous long brunette tresses. This is definitely a beauty signature she is renowned for.

As it has become the norm for women over 40 to automatically start cutting their hair into short styles, many people have suggested that Jane is too old to have long hair and should follow suit. But Jane is a woman with her own thoughts and ideas on beauty in women over 40 and as a result she refuses to give in to general consensus and will not allow her age to dictate her beauty sense.

Jane has had many supporters in this decision and won a lucrative advertising assignment with Clairol.

Jane has been known to say ?Many people ask me if I?ll cut my long hair when I get older. My standard answer is? I hope my hair is so long it won?t fit into my coffin when I die. I have no intention of ever cutting my long locks again.

Other Aging Hair Factors to Consider:

There are other factors to consider with aging hair. With age, your long hair's condition and colour can fade. It can appear limp, faded or discoloured. Your long hair needs to be carefully maintained. Long hair which is aging needs to and should be treated to weekly conditioning treatments, regular trims, and in some cases aging long locks could benefit from skilfully applied highlights or to have colour added to restore lustre, bounce and body.

Extreme changes to colour in older hair should be avoided. The bleached blonde look should be discarded for a blend of warmer blondes and/or carefully applied highlights.

Since skin colour also comes into play and older women should work with an expert to enhance skin tone and blend it with your hair colour. White blonde, dark brown or black hair shades may also look harsh or unflattering on older faces.

An aging woman with long hair in good condition with good colour and body can also play with the edges of the style to add some softening around the aging face. A soft feathery fringe or feathering around the hairline close to the face can be very flattering and not require any cutting off the length of the hair. You can also use a variety of styling products to add softness throughout the fringe and around the perimeter of your face.

I recently read an article which mentioned a woman with gorgeous silver hair to her waist. It was thick, shiny and well maintained. The colour was gorgeous against her deep blue eyes and pale skin. She looked very impressive for her age which appeared to be mid-sixties? That woman is a great inspiration. Obviously she knows that long hair can look fantastic at any age with the right style, condition and attitude.

Basically the main thing to remember if you're wanting to have long hair as you age is to understand what is best for your face and natural colouring. The first step to achieving this goal is to find a great hair consultant who will work with you and advise you on colour and condition. A great hairstylist will also offer creative suggestions on how to boost your hairstyle for maximum benefit.
